When I was in my last years of schooling, my mother came home one day and handed me a small book, “TOTO CHAN- The little girl at the Window” by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi.

TOTO CHAN turned out to be a favourite of mine, a book that would reflect an individual’s efforts to create an inclusive and safe environment for children against all odds.

The “TOMOE” in TOMOE Consulting is the name of the school in the book – a space that has had a lasting impact on those portrayed in the stories.

In my own life I have been through numerous situations where I have been “the Other” and have felt first hand what it means not to be “In”, and the stories in this book have helped me through those times.
